What is “sundowning”?

As you get ready for autumn, it’s also a good time to get ready for how the seasonal changes may bring up sundowning for those with dementia.

Sundowning is an occurrence where some patients with dementia experience greater confusion and anxiety later in the day. Less daylight hours in autumn and winter can increase the chances of patients with dementia emerging with this ailment.

Organize your day to include more movement outside, in the daylight, in the early part of the day and more calming, peaceful activities in the evening. In addition, some studies recommend keeping your home brightly lit in the late afternoon and evening can help reduce sundowning.

What are some ideas you can share with us to help prevent “sundowning”?
